There is a man laying dead on the sidewalk next to my office building. I can see him from my window. Someone has finally put a sheet over him, but the blood is seeping through.
The office building next to mine is undergoing construction - it is going to be a hotel when it is all finished. Today there was an accident and the rickety old construction/freight elevator that they assembled between the two buildings collapsed. We all ran to look out the windows, and he was already dead. There is a big steel pole on top of him, and a lot of blood near his head. I think he fell when the structure collapsed, because his harness was tied to the structure, and not to the building. There were some other guys who just hung there after it all fell down, but they must have been tied in to something else.
I cried a little, and I didn't even know him. Then, I couldn't stop shaking for a long time. All the yelling was a bit unnerving, too.
How long do you suppose they will leave the body laying there? There are crowds on the sidewalk in front of the buildings, but the mess is blocking the view, and the police are keeping them back. Basically, only the people with window offices in my building can see the body. I took a picture, as a reflex I guess, but I don't feel right about posting it.
