Summer of Silliness: Dogs & Cats Edition

Oh, look!  Tik made a friend on an early morning walk.

Summer of Silliness

They are almost the same size.

Summer of Silliness

Tik is looking at me like, "Well, now what?"

Summer of Silliness

"Is that a Pokemon or something?  Do we catch it?"

Decorating for Christmas with Cats

We started decorating for Christmas around here.

Untitled

We are doing a minimalist thing with the tree.  Unless the kids decide that they want to put ornaments on it, which they haven't, yet.

Untitled

I also put some candles in the windows.

Untitled

Untitled

And I decorated a bush that's outside.

Untitled

I also lit up the porch swing.

Untitled

The night that I went outside to take these photos, Tik sneaked past me on my way back inside.  While he was outside, he made a friend.  This little gray kitten has followed him on his walks before, but this time, he followed Tik right back into the house.

Untitled

The dog brought home a cat, and was all, "Can I keep it?"

Untitled

The kitten seemed to really like Tik, until Tik decided that he wanted to play, and started jumping around and barking at it.  Then the kitten decided that it really didn't like the dog, after all.

Untitled

But it still liked us, so it climbed up on my lap and started mewing at me between hissing at the dog.

Untitled

I think it was trying to tell me to get rid of that dog.

Untitled

Whatever, cat.  The dog was here first.  He belongs here.  Also?  Cats are kind of assholes.  As soon as I put up a Christmas tree, that very same day, this cat decides to come along and try to knock it over.  No, just no.

Untitled

We can't keep the cat.  But, since we fed it, or more like it ate Tik's food while Tik watched, it'll probably be back.

In which there are Kittens that Explode

My parents bought me a new card game for my birthday this year called Exploding Kittens.

Exploding Kittens

It's hilarious and quick and fun to play.  Easy to learn and short enough to play in between anything else that we are doing.  Like lunch and math.

Exploding Kittens

I highly recommend it.  And I can't wait for the expansion pack: Imploding Kittens.

Exploding Kittens

Beware those Kittens, you guys.

Lex's Slumber Party

Lex is turning 7!

Lex is going to be having a birthday and turning 7 this week, so we had a small party for him and his friends this past weekend.  He wanted a simple slumber party and a plain cake.  A chocolate mint cake, with mint chocolate chip ice cream.  So, that's what we did.

Lex is turning 7!

They ate tons of pizza and chips, too.  They played video games for hours.  They watched funny cat videos on the internet.  They played Pokemon.

Lex is turning 7!

They even played some Bang! The Dice Game and Dominion.

Lex is turning 7!

Everyone seemed to have a riot.  I didn't take very many photos, because I was trying to be inconspicuous, and also, because what is even going on here?  I don't know.  And I was there.  But it was fun.

Falls on the Brazos

While driving across the entire State of Texas, we found the Falls on the Brazos state park.  Since we needed to stop and take a break, it seemed like a good place to explore.

IMG_5859

Unfortunately, the entire park was pretty much closed for the season, and completely deserted.

IMG_5855

Well, not completely deserted.  There was plenty of wildlife.

IMG_5848

This guy was almost as tall as Lex!

IMG_5838

Since it had been raining recently, the water was moving very quickly.  Very.

IMG_5837

This turtle found a nice spot to rest.  He was as big as Tik.

Homeschool Thoughts: On Teaching a Subject You Don't Know

Last summer, I declared that we would have a summer homeschool camp.  I wanted to do something to keep us involved in learning over the summer, and I wanted it to be fun.  In order to ensure that the kids bought into the idea, I decided to let them pick the theme for our summer camp.

They decided that they wanted to do a foreign language summer camp.  Sounded awesome to me.  I have been teaching them Spanish since day one.

What languages were they interested in learning?  Latin and Greek, of course.

Do I speak Latin or Greek?  Know how to read Latin or Greek?  Nope.  But I said yes anyways.  And now, almost a year later, we have completed our first Greek course and are nearing the end of our first Latin book.

I have some thoughts and ideas about teaching your kids a subject that you don't know yourself.  Here they are, in no particular order:

It is possible to learn along with your kids.  This is great because it models for your children the way that people learn things.  It also demonstrates to your kids that learning should never stop, even after you finish school.  Mommy is learning Latin just for the fun of it?  So am I!  It's a bonding thing.

If you aren't comfortable learning along with your kids, you can just stay one step ahead of them.  This is the method that I am (accidentally) using in teaching Connor how to write his own apps for the Apple store (which is what he is really interested in doing right now).  I didn't really intend for it to happen this way.  I am very comfortable with diving right in and learning along with him.  But, one night I got really interested, and I watched several lessons and progressed past him, all while he was in bed.  I couldn't help myself.  (It turns out that I am also really interested in writing Apple apps.)  Even though I don't usually operate this way, it is possible to teach the lesson you just learned.

Anytime you don't have the answer, you can look it up together.  Again, this demonstrates that whole learning-never-stops idea.  It also takes a lot of pressure off of little perfectionists, because it proves that no one has to know every little detail, as long as they know where to look when they need to figure it out.  Teaching your kids how to do research using the internet, dictionary, encyclopedia, or going on a trip to the library is very valuable.  Making it an automatic reflex whenever a question arises ensures that they will never be content to let something they don't know just slip by.

For instance, today we found out that the first Siamese cat in the United States was a gift to President Rutherford B. Hayes' wife from the King of Siam.  (Thank you, Presidential Pets Coloring Book.)  Connor asked what was special about a Siamese cat.  So, I got the "S" encyclopedia out and we looked it up.  Then, he wanted to know about Siam, which is now known as Thailand, and that lead us to the "T" encyclopedia so that we could look that up.  The whole exercise took less than 5 minutes, but I feel like it was more memorable and that he has a better understanding of the world just because we looked into a book.

You can get someone else to teach them.  When Lex said that he wanted to learn to play the violin, I never once thought about being the one to teach him.  I have never played a stringed instrument, and I didn't really want to be the one to teach him.  He is taking lessons in a small group setting with a couple of other kids, and he loves his violin teacher.  Also, I really enjoy asking him to teach me what he learned in his violin class each week.  So, even though I am not teaching him, I am still learning along with him.

A Quick Trip to the Farm

There is a farm pretty close to our house, and sometimes we go there to buy duck eggs.

Untitled

We went last week before Easter to buy two dozen duck eggs, and to look at the baby bunnies and baby chicks.  Connor and Lex thought that maybe they wanted a baby bunny for a pet for about a second, until they realized that having a dog was better.  But those baby bunnies sure are soft and fluffy!  I'm glad that we got to visit them before Easter.

Untitled

The baby chicks were pretty cute, too.  Some of them were pecking at the walls like they were trying to escape, which the boys thought was hilarious.

Untitled

Even Tik came along, and he was very well behaved.  He didn't growl at or chase the big fat barn cats, though the cats didn't seem to like him.  He did growl at the baby goats, though.  I dunno why.  They were pretty funny.

Untitled

When we were leaving, Connor told me that it was almost like a real field trip!

Lex keeps coloring on his cat. A photo essay.

P.S.  This has become a daily occurrence.  And the cat keeps coming back during art time.  I don't do a thing about it, and the marker just comes off when he washes himself.  I love washable Crayola markers for that!

Arizona Wildlife

Kevin and I are both from Ohio, so we are really only familiar with the Ohio variety wildlife warning signs that appear on freeways. So, when we saw this:

...we weren't entirely sure what we were dealing with. Eventually, and after much joking, we settled on a huge mutant white tail deer. And in the end, we weren't too far off the mark.

While we were driving around in the Grand Canyon National Park, a large group of elk ran across the road, and we stopped to take photos.

It turns out that the signs were meant to refer to elk in the first place. Also, when we were visiting it was the time of year just after the males shed their antlers, so we didn't get to see any with huge antlers on their heads.

Approximately one mile after we stopped to stalk the elk, we encountered this sign:

...but fortunately, we never encountered any mountain lions. Or huge mutant house cats.

Cruiser got his nails done

Cruiser has become more aggressive in sharpening his claws of late. In fact, I was clipping them several times a week, and as soon as I was done blunting them, he would go and start sharpening them on the rug by the back door. He seems to have some sense of self-preservation, choosing the smallest cheapest rug in our house to use to sharpen his nails.

But, he had started to leave little scratch marks all over the boys' hands. This was upsetting. So, Kevin got an estimate from the vet to have Cruiser declawed. Not wanting to spend $400 on a cat, we started looking at alternative solutions. That's when Kevin discovered Soft Paws.

I put them on Cruiser's nails yesterday. It wasn't even hard. I gave Cruiser a little saucer of cream, and then while he was enjoying his treat, I slipped the plastic over his nails. I put glue in 2 or 3 at a time, then put them on. Then I put glue on 2 or 3 more, and slipped those on. Eventually, all 10 of his front nails were covered.

He took one off within an hour. But I wasn't surprised. It was his shortest nail, and he had damaged it somehow. He really complained when I put that one on. Plus, it was a thumb nail, so it isn't really one of the ones he uses to scratch with.

As Kevin said, 90% isn't bad.

It's the second day now, and the remaining 9 are still on. And we all love them. I think even Cruiser is happier.

P.S. We are taking that Christmas tree down today. I swear.

Breakfast with Lex

This morning, Connor and I had breakfast with Lex. It was a good time. We all sat at the kitchen table and talked and laughed and ate.

This actually happens just about every morning.

On this morning, however, there was a bit of snow on the lawn outside. Even though there is still an equal, if not greater, amount of green out there, Lex was very excited about the "snowy weather outside." You see, it is the first snow we have gotten this winter, if you can even call it that.

I ate Cocoa Puffs, as did Connor. Lex, however, choose to mix his Cocoa Puffs with Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs. This might sound like a good idea, but it really isn't. The chocolate puffs in the Reese's cereal really clash with the Cocoa Puffs. To solve this problem, Lex resulted to ketchup.

Yes, he dipped his chocolate and peanut butter flavored puffs in ketchup. I'm sure it was a new low in toddler fine dining.

But, Cruiser was intrigued. He came over to investigate this new development. You see, Cruiser really likes to play with and then eat the Cocoa Puffs that the kids drop on the floor during breakfast. It seemed that he really liked the ketchup idea, because he got a bit aggressive about trying to steal directly from Lex's bowl. So Lex told him, "Cruiser get down. Mines."

I love the way that Lex disciplines his cat. It's so cute. And the way he always adds an "s" to the end of "mine" is priceless.

Today was Fabulous! Reasons Why...

7. Swimming in the pool with the boys

6. Chicken pot pie at Bob Evans with Wendy and company

5. Date night with Kevin and my good friends

4. PF Chang's Price Fixe Menu with Mini Desserts

3. I didn't spill anything on my jeans all day long. Nor did any small children come and put their dirty handprints on my jeans.

2. Lex put Cruiser to sleep tonight. "Night night night night night night, Cruiser."

1. While we were seeing the babysitters out of the door tonight, Connor took his little self up to bed, tucked himself in, and fell asleep.

Mischief Here

Wow. Caught in the act. Look at those faces! What sorts of mischief do you suppose these little guys are getting into?

Maybe putting the cat in the bucket? Yeah, that was their plan. Because Lex didn't fit. Right?

In other news...

Today is December 1st.

I would like to say that I am happy to start this new month with all members of our family present and accounted for, and in good enough health.

Cruiser has another respiratory infection. I'm going to be giving that cat more antibiotics. And it seems like if I ever want to stop giving it antibiotics, I'm going to have to stop taking it to the vet. It probably doesn't help that he sneezed his body weight in green goop all over the vet during the exam, right? I don't care so much about the cat's cold as I do about my boys catching some sort of feline flu. And apparently they can, so I treat it.

Yeah, that cat weighs about 2 pounds.

My grandpa is also accounted for and in good enough health. I mean, right?

You know, I am pretty sure that he knows who Connor and Lex are, because he does recognize them and their names, but 9 times out of 10, he calls them "Skeeter" and "Magoo." I think that's probably because he can't come up with their names off the top of his head in the heat of the moment, whatever moment that might be.

When I was little, my grandpa used to entertain us with "I once spit so far" stories. As in, "I once spit so far into outer space that NASA found my spit and mailed it back to me." Or, "I can spit clear across the ocean. To Japan! I once spit so far that I hit a man in Japan right smack in the eye." Totally believable, right?

And, as it is finally December, I cannot hold Connor off any longer. We will be getting a Christmas tree sometime this weekend, and the weather seems nice enough that we will be putting up our outside lights today.

If you need me, I'll be outside with the ladder and some extension cords. And maybe some duct tape. Because duct tape will be sure to make my 4 year-old's Christmas lights display plan even more classy. You know he was solely responsible for the art direction for our lights last year, and they weren't half bad. Especially since he was only 3 years old then. I still don't have a clue what I really want them to look like, so he will probably get to decide again now.

Photos to follow, I'm sure.

Mommy, can we keep it?

This weekend was very full and busy for us. Not only did we travel out of town to visit Grandma Ella and celebrate her birthday and take a trip to the Cleveland Kid's LegoFest, but on Friday night we got a new pet.

Kevin and Connor and Lex were playing in the backyard while I was getting dinner onto the table. Then, right before I was set to call them in, they came in with a tiny little kitten. They wanted to keep it for a pet. It was so shocking to me, that I cannot even remember what it was that we ate for dinner that night now.

We ended up taking it to the vet, and the little thing is approximately 8 weeks old, weighs about one pound, and he has a lung infection, so we started some antibiotics. He has a runny nose (and eyes) and sneezes all the time, but he should get better soon. But besides that, he is the sweetest little kitten ever, and the boys are totally in love with him.

The boys have named him Cruiser, after the famous Groveport horse. Connor takes exceptionally good care of Cruiser. When I wake up in the morning, Connor has usually let Cruiser out, and the two of them are cuddling on the couch and watching cartoons together. While Lex napped yesterday, Connor and I played Monopoly. The entire time, Cruiser snoozed on Connor's lap. It is a really cuddly kitten.

Lex is totally over the moon for the kitten, and we are working on keeping him from loving the little guy to squish. It has taken a few days, but I think we have finally established that once the cat walks away from Lex, Lex is not to go and chase it. Because then the cat hides and Lex cries.

"Mommy, Cruiser ran off. I want my kitty. In my hand."

That's what Lex says. Or sobs, as the case may be.

Here's a funny thing that Connor said about the cat while we were at the vet. When the vet informed us that Cruiser was a boy, Connor said, "I knew it was a boy. If it had been a girl, it would have come with a bow on its head."

Connor Can Use a Hose!

My rose bush blooms every year over Memorial Day weekend. Today, I went over to look at it, and I noticed little bugs on my beloved rose bush! I figured that they were rose bush aphids, so I Googled it and spent about two minutes doing research. Now that I'm a total expert on aphids, we went out to solve our problem. I sprayed the bush using the hose on high pressure. They were gone when I was done. I plan to keep an eye on the bush for the next week or so, to make sure they don't come back.

Then, I decided to water the hostas that Kevin just planted. I showed Connor how to use the hose, and he did very well with watering the hostas.

When we were done with that, I decided to use the hose to clean the front porch. After I was finished, I heard the new little kittens under the porch. I had no idea that they were there, and I probably soaked them! Under our front porch is a very protected area, and it was a great place for the kittens, until I came along and sprayed them with a hose unknowingly.

Connor and I went to get a flashlight so that we could peek under the porch and see the kittens. While I was kneeling on the front sidewalk with the flashlight, trying to see the kittens, Connor grabbed the hose and showed me that he remembered how to use it, by soaking me!

When teaching a toddler how to use the hose, remember to put it away when finished.
Also, teach him not to spray people in the back.

Anyways, we didn't see the kittens, and now I wonder if the mama cat will move them. Now that I know that the kittens are there, I totally know which one the mama cat is, because she has been acting strangely around the front porch for at least a week now.

A lovely afternoon

In this video you will see a number of things.

You will see one of the reasons that we go through so much milk around here: we feed one of the neighbor's cats to amuse Connor. This little kitty looks just like the stuffed one that he carries around with him almost everywhere. She had kittens earlier this summer, and they are super cute, too, although I didn't seem them outside just now.

Then, you will see proof that Connor does walk!

Finally, you will see the second thing that I have sucessfully purchased from Craiglist. We bought this slide for $15 the other night. It's a Little Tykes, so it is in really great shape. Those things are practially indestructible. Connor really likes it, though he can't do it himself yet. He can climb up the slide part halfway and then slide down on his belly. That totally counts as fun in my book!

Happy Monday All!

This morning I can't sleep, and I have a headache. Right now I am having a cup of tea, and hopefully I will be able to get in a nap before my doctor's appointment this afternoon. I've had a headache for a good while now, so hopefully the doctor can make it go away.

There are only two more days until my due date, and I'm starting to come to terms with the idea that I might not have this baby for another two weeks or so. At first the idea of having the baby late was very distressing to me, but I guess now I am more accepting of it, because there really isn't anything that I can do about it! I might as well enjoy being pregnant while I can, because it hasn't really been so bad, and soon it will be over.

This morning, I also discovered why the birds seem to have been ignoring our bird feeder for the past few weeks, even though we filled it back up with seed. While I was eating my breakfast cereal, I watched out the window as one of the cuter neighborhood cats sat on our picnic table watching the feeder. It was like he was guarding it! One little birdie came over and sat on the trellis above the feeder, but he didn't dare come down to the feeder and risk being in the reach of the kitty cat, and I can't say that I blame him, because that cat would have leapt up there in a heartbeat to get him!
