Have you ever wondered?

Have you ever wondered what was in my little diaper bag? I gave up carrying a separate purse when I became a SAHM of two little boys, and I just carry around one diaper bag now.


My beloved cousin Pam once told me that I had the heaviest diaper bag in the world. While I'm not entirely convinced that's true, I was surprised at how much stuff came out of my bag when I emptied it today. (I had big plans to run it through the wash to get all the mud off the bottom of it from the soccer field.)


First of all, there are extra clothes for two boys, which amounts to the following:

2 shirts
2 pairs of shorts
1 pair socks
1 pair underpants

Next, we have some essentials:

Baby lotion
diaper cream
teething gel
Neo to Go spray
Neosporin packets
(conspicuously absent: band aids)
Hand sanitizer
tissues
large ziplock bag for containing messy clothes



My wallet and small camera (along with USB card reader) are basically the only things that were in the bag for me.

Here are some of the more interesting finds:

Two grab-and-g0 play packs (with coloring books, markers/crayons and stickers)
18 crayons
one mini maglight flashlight
two action figures
Nesquick chocolate milk mix



Finally, we have the typical stuff you would expect to find in a diaper bag:

two different kinds of sunscreen
two disposable toothbrushes
two disposable bibs
diapers and wipes

Not pictured, but often shoved in my bag (well, at least since I got it on Mother's Day): my Nook.

I apparently have a lot to say about a lot of nothing

I'm still feeling a little bit under the weather, so I've proclaimed today the "New Casual Wednesday." I'm wearing khakis, a sweater, and a really wild patterned blouse today. I bought the blouse at Plato's closet, and it is the only thing I've ever bought from the thrift store. It actually still had the tags on it, and it's from someplace like Bermuda Joe, or some other store that I've never heard of. I can just imagine some girl getting it for her birthday from her dear Aunt Marge, and pretending to like it, and then promptly exchanging it at Plato's for some used Abercrombie duds, which is what she really wanted. What she didn't see, however, was how cool it is to wear this headache-inducing printed shirt with a pair of Abercrombie khakis and an Abercrombie cable knit sweater so that the printed collar, cuffs and shirt tail show.

Last night I was watching That 70s Show on FX, when I saw an advertisement for the movie Duplex, with Drew Barrymore. I had wanted to see the movie, but never got around to it for some reason, so I was excited to watch it tonight at 8. It wasn't until this morning that I realized that what I really want to watch tonight at 8 is the Grammys. Good job, FX, you almost had me. But, the Grammys are only on tonight, and I can still rent Duplex when I get around to it.

Speaking of things that are on TV, when do the Olympics start? My family made such a big deal out of watching the Olympics when I was a kid. I think everybody's did. So, I'm excited to see some figure skating, but I don't know when it will be on. I guess I'll have to look it up.

Yesterday, when I was leaving work, I bumped into the girl who works next door as she was leaving, too. I noticed that she was carrying the same type of purse that I have, except hers is round and has white canvas with the multicolored LV logos on it. Again, I thought about how much we must have in common, and that I should make an effort to get to know her better, but she did take my spoon. Apparently, I hold grudges against people that I don't really know better than I do my friends. That's just her bad luck, for now at least.

Actually, now I wonder what she thinks of me, and why she hasn't made the effort to become my friend. Maybe she thinks I'm too old, since I get the feeling that she is about 2 years younger than me. I don't know.

I am a little purse person. I have been toying with the idea of buying a new purse lately (not that it will actually happen anytime soon - a woman shopping for a purse is comparable to a man shopping for a car, and maybe even a new house with a garage to store it in), and every purse that I keep picking up in the stores is even smaller than the one that I carry now. If you aren't familiar with my current purse, you should know that it is tiny. (I drink a cup of coffee every morning that is as tall as my purse - just look at the picture.)

Anyway, I think that I am drawn towards small purses, and each of my purses is progressively smaller than the last. I think I have a fear of large purses, and by extension, of becoming a bag lady. But, I am not alone...

I recently read a financial article online that said that a surprising percentage of women actually have the fear of becoming a bag lady, and that each woman expresses it differently, and that most don't even realize that they harbor this fear. I apparently express my natural fear of one day being destitute in my old age by carrying really tiny, expensive purses now.

(Or, maybe I just don't want to carry a big heavy bag with me everywhere I go, and internet article authors over-analyze and complicate things.)
