Things I Like Today

Things I am enjoying right now, in no particular order:

I'm really looking forward to seeing Star Trek Beyond, but before I do, I want to watch Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness again.  I also like this new song and video from Rihanna:

I just finished reading the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness:  The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men.  I think I'm going to go ahead and read the prequel, The New World.  I think it's just a short story, but I really like this series, so I'm going to go with it where it leads.

This song:

The best tv show right now is Containment on the CW.  Are you watching it?

The best app right now is Pokemon Go.  I also really like Mimpi Dreams.  But, Pokemon Go wins because augmented reality.

Also, this:

Spirit of the Cougar

My Spirit of the Cougar project is getting close to being done.  Like the end is finally in sight.

Then, there is this:

And I'm looking forward to the Summer Olympics.

Happy Summer!!

I should cross-stitch that onto a throw pillow.

The videos that Connor made with his Go Pro camera are everything I hoped they would be when we bought it for him.

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

I've gotten back to my long-ago cross-stitch project that my Grandma gave me to work on.

Spirit of the Cougar

Did you know that I am Native American? That's right, I'm part Seneca Indian!

My Grandmother's Grandfather, whose name was Habminton Kelley Klingensmith (according to my Grandmother), was full-blooded Seneca Indian.

His Daughter, Marie Viola Klingensmith Faith, was 1/2 Seneca.

Her Daughter, Caroline LaRue Faith K*****, is my Grandmother, and is 1/4 Seneca.

Her Son, Stephen, is my Dad and he is 1/8 Seneca.

Which means that I am 1/16 Seneca, and that my children (Connor and Lex) are 1/32 Seneca.

Their children (my grandchildren) will be 1/64 Seneca, which will be the last generation that will be eligible to register with the Seneca tribe, as I understand things. Not that I am registered with the tribe or anything, though.

I never registered with the tribe, mostly because my Dad never did. I believe that he never registered because my Grandma never did. And, as I understand it, she never registered because her original birth certificate is "missing." I don't think she will ever "find" her "lost" birth certificate, because I'm pretty sure that she destroyed the darn thing, seeing as how it would probably serve as evidence that she is about 2 months older than my Pap Pap, instead of about 10 months younger, which is what she prefers to claim.

Anyways...

Remember the cross-stitch project that my Grandma sent me to work on?

This is what the Spirit of the Cougar looks like. (So far, anyway.)

I decided to look up some information about the Spirit of the Cougar, just for the sake of entertainment.

I was kind of hoping that the Cougar was the Native American Spirit related to pregnancy and childbirth. Even though it isn't, I wasn't entirely disappointed. Here is a summary of what I discovered:

Animal Totem: The Cougar

The cougar is swift, graceful, spontaneous, and determined. Cougar people make great leaders and are courageous, ambitious and determined to succeed. They want to find purpose in life and to dominate what they do best.

Key words that describe the Cougar: Leadership, loyalty, courage, taking responsibility, foresight

Interestingly, this description reminds me of the meaning of the name Alexander.

Alexander (Greek): defender of the people; leader

Which is almost as good as being the Spirit related to pregnancy and childbirth in this case.

And, since we are talking about Animal Totems, I thought I'd look up mine. Mine is the Snake.

Animal Totem: The Snake: The snake is mysterious, intuitive and is the epitome of transformation. Snake people aim for satisfaction and thrive on praise. They require great self-discipline and will power to control their harsh natures.

Key words that describe the Snake: Impulsive, shrewdness, rebirth, transformation, initiation, and wisdom

Memo to Kevin: There is a Pandora Snake charm. Hint!
Connor's Animal Totem is the Woodpecker. I think this is highly interesting, because, at the age of two, the woodpecker is his favorite bird. I don't really know why, or how he was exposed to woodpeckers, but sometimes he will ask me, out of the blue, "What woodpeckers doing, Mommy?" In fact, when I was putting him to bed tonight, he informed me that Big Bird was a woodpecker, and he showed me how his Big Bird stuffed doll would peck at his pillow. Super cute!

Animal Totem: The Woodpecker

Woodpecker people are home-loving, giving and sensitive. They are also very imaginative and sometimes moody. Their goal in life is to live in harmony with the environment.

Key words that describe the Woodpecker: Sensitive, protective, and devotion

Waiting...

While waiting for Baby Lex, I've started a new project to keep me occupied. It's a counted cross-stitch project called "Spirit of the Cougar." It's a Native American woman with some cougars...my grandmother bought it and started it and decided that she couldn't finish it because the weave of the cloth was too small. She got about three stitches done before giving up...and she started with the white colored thread on the white fabric...no wonder she couldn't see what she was doing!

Anyways, the last time that my parents went to visit her, she sent it home with them for me to work on. I think I'm going to try to get it done in time to have it framed and gifted to her for Christmas. I'd post a picture of what I have done so far, but honestly, it doesn't look like much unless you know what it is going to look like when it is done, so I'm not going to bother.

Something Special

I have something special to post, so I have made my way into the basement and am currently using a very slow desktop computer. (I really miss my laptop! I am anxiously awaiting word that I can go and pick it up!)

I swear that every time I go into our basement, *someone* has rearranged the furniture. Since I haven't been down here in a long while this time, the differences are amazing. We recently decided that the basement would be a totally kids-free zone, that way Kevin could set up his exercise equipment and ham radio stuff. I guess that means that the basement is also becoming his "man cave."

Anyways, enough about the basement. That's not what I'm really here to talk about.

What I'm really here to talk about is the embroidery project that I finished yesterday. I started it last weekend after I came home from the hospital to give myself something to do while I was resting (read: laying around the house). It was a crewel embroidery kit that Ella gave to me. It was a kit that her mother had purchased, but had never begun. Ella didn't want to just throw it away, and after hanging on to it for all these years, she gave it to me, because she knew that I did cross-stitch.

I had never done crewel embroidery before, but I enjoyed it. It's not the same as cross-stitch, but if you have the patience for one, I don't see any reason that you couldn't do the other. The two aren't as different from one another as, say, crocheting and knitting. (BTW- knitting is the devil.)

As I said, I finished the project yesterday. It still needs pressed and framed and gift wrapped for Ella (I don't think she reads this often, if at all, so don't mention it to her), but here is a picture:

Now I know that everyone that is paying attention will notice the names! Ella is Grandma to Connor and Lex.

That's right...we've decided to call the new baby Lex. His full name shall be Alexander Beckett.

I'll even save you a minute, and tell you what those names mean, so you don't have to go and look it up yourself.

Alexander (Greek): defender of the people; leader

Beckett (English): dweller by the brook; bee cottage; methodical

It seems to me that every place I look has a completely different meaning for the name Beckett, but the meanings for Alexander are always the same.

Kevin actually came up with the name Lex. I hadn't been considering Alexander as a first name at all until he suggested it, although I did have Beckett on a list of possible middle names. I like that Beckett is similar to Connor's middle name, Everett, without being too much the same.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering about my next project to keep myself occupied, I think I'm going to start making (crocheting) a blanket for Baby Lex. I've already picked out a cute cow patterned blanket from the same book that I made Connor's sheep blanket from, but I need to buy some yarn.

Recent Projects

Last week, I stitched Connor's name onto his stocking. I had done the stockings for Kevin and myself the first Christmas that we were married. I also put our last name on a matching tree skirt that year.

This is the blanket that I made for Connor's newest cousin, baby A, a few months ago. I didn't share the pictures when I first finished it, because it was a surprise, and then I didn't share the pictures until now because I was thinking of making one (or two, depending) more for Sara. But, since Sara's twin babies are both boys, I don't think I'll be making her this type of blanket anymore.
