For some reason, the medical community agrees that babies dream, but seems to have trouble deciding whether or not babies can have nightmares. I think that they can.
Last night, Connor woke up at an unusual time, and he was crying like he was in pain. I had actually been having a nightmare that someone was in his room, and was going to kidnap him. So, when he screamed out, I thought my dream was real and raced in there. Of course, he was fine, except for the fact that he was clearly distressed. He was crying and almost hyperventilating. We stayed together in the rocker for about 45 minutes after that, until he was sleeping peacefully again.
So, my opinion is that, yes, babies can have nightmares. I don't know what they would be about, but they can have them.

Poor Connor. It seams reasonable to me that he can have nightmares. I think Zoey does. But it’s cute when she runs in her sleep because her paws move.
Z had nightmares and night terrors as an infant, and it was horrible. I think Connor is right at the prime age for them to start, if I remember correctly. The good news is that they do eventually stop--I think she was done with that phase before she hit one year.
