it was just a simple broken dishwasher.
Do you remember my horrible experience with the dishwasher repair man? You can read all about it here.
After that, Kevin called the dishwasher repair company and complained. He was basically told that all the problems were *my* fault, and if I had "shown up on time," that none of it would have happened. *Snort!*
So, Kevin, being an engineer, decided that he would just fix the darn thing himself. He set about doing some testing, and ran the dishwasher about half a dozen times. That's when we noticed some new and even more annoying problems. The dishwasher was now leaking. And, the repair man had failed to put one of the screws back that attached the dishwasher to the counter top, and the counter top was damaged during the test runs as a result.
Now, I need a new dishwasher and a new counter top.
If we are going to replace the counter by the dishwasher and sink, we are probably going to have to replace all the counters so that they match.
If we are going to replace the dishwasher, we should probably go ahead and replace the fridge, which is getting older and has some minor problems (a leak in the water dispenser).
If we are going to have the counters, dishwasher and fridge out of the kitchen, it seems like the perfect time to lay down wood flooring. And, if we are going to do the flooring in the kitchen, we should go ahead and do the floors in the dining room, hall and front entrance way, so they all match. (I've been waiting ages to get the carpet out of our dining room - we actually eat in there, and we have a toddler. The carpet is in bad shape.)
And, if we are going to be replacing the flooring, we should probably repair the sub-floor structure by the back door that has been damaged by water in the past.
My broken dishwasher has turned into a full scale remodeling project! Lord help us!

oooh, fun, you should be on one of those HGTV makeover shows---a new showcase kitchen--how awesome (oh ya, they aren't free, are they:). Shouldn't you be going after the dishwasher guy for (pun intended:) 'screwing' up? Seriously, didn't his neglect damage your counters? I know, how do you prove it.
W.O.W.
Good luck with that!
