I knew that Grandma Ella and Grandpa Kirk were planning to buy Connor a John Deere tractor for his birthday. We had talked about them buying the pedal powered model, because Connor had liked it so much at the Ohio State Fair last summer.
Before Connor's party, Kevin asked me to wrap a big John Deere box. I assumed that it was the present from Kirk and Ella. I was a little confused about why they hadn't wrapped it themselves, but I figured it was no big deal, and I had my cousin Pam help me wrap it so that I could keep working on the food.
We left the big John Deere box for the last gift, and we hadn't opened anything else from Kirk and Ella before this point. This reinforced my belief that they had been the ones to buy the big box tractor. When it was opened, and we discovered that it was a big, battery powered tractor, there was some confusion about who had bought it. Kirk and Ella swore that they hadn't bought it, but I thought that they were just kidding. The whole time we were trying to figure out where the tractor came from, Kevin was right there, but he didn't say anything. He thought it was too much fun...
because Kevin and I bought the big battery powered tractor for Connor! Surprise!
Connor has been infatuated with these tractors in the store for ages now. He talks about them each time we walk past...and he knew exactly what was in the box after getting about 2 square inches of wrapping paper off of it. He was so excited about the new big tractor!
But wait, we must go back to Kirk and Ella for a second! They had accidentally left Connor's presents in the car, so after we had finished opening everything, they figured out that Connor hadn't opened their gifts yet, and went to fetch them. Ella was very disappointed that Connor didn't seem to like the little ride-on/push tractor that she had bought for him as much as he liked the big battery powered one. But, she shouldn't be disappointed any longer.
Connor is terrified of the battery powered tractor. We put it together, let the battery charge for 18+ hours, and got it out for him on Sunday. He was so excited until he got on it and it MOVED. He was so scared, he hopped right off and didn't even want to touch the darn thing after that. Kevin was crushed. I have the moment on video, and some day we will look back and laugh. Not for a while, though.
Since then, Connor has warmed up to the tractor a little bit...he will touch it and sit on it, but mostly just likes to play with the back end of it. If he does sit on the seat, he keeps his legs up and away from the pedal.
He *loves* the little Connor-powered tractor that Kirk and Ella bought. He plays with it all the time. I posted a video of him with that one yesterday.
Some day he will love the battery powered one, too.
