After seeing so many cute Valentine's Day cookies on different blogs this week (I've been in a baking-blog mood), I decided it was time to make my own.
And I decided to step up my game and make real royal icing for the first time. Homemade and everything.
It was tricky at first.
But, some of them turned out nicely. And Kevin said it was the best tasting icing he's ever had.
Plus, I really like how shiny it is! I think that I learned a lot tonight about the physical characteristics of royal icing, so next time I use it, I think it will be better. Practice makes perfect and all that.

Looking good! It looks like you did the center hearts on the cookies and then did the outlining. With royal icing it is way easier if you do the outline first as a barrier and then fill it in.
That's totally how I did it, but I think I need to work on the consistency of the outline piping, because it dried funny...or maybe I just need a smaller tip. I'm still trying to figure it out. Some of the last cookies I did turned out better, but I ran out of icing before I got it down.
The cookies were delicious! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, those are shiny and beautiful! Now I'm going to have to Google royal icing and figure out what it is.
Katie - I just finished a batch of marshmallow fondant for a treat that I am making for later this week, and I was thinking of you while I was making it, because I'm pretty sure that the finished treat will make you jealous the same way that your recent trip to the restaurant in Grand Central made me jealous. (I need some of that squash soup!)
