Cincinnati * Art Museum

On Sunday, after our stop at the Cincinnati Fire Museum, we were looking for a good spot to eat lunch. Somehow, we ended up at the Cincinnati Art Museum, so we decided to eat at their Terrace Cafe and see some art.

It was a wonderful adventure.

Here are some of my favorite paintings that I saw that afternoon, after eating a BLAT in the cafe. (The "a" is for avacado - which I will now be adding to all my BLT sandwiches, by the way.)

Mural for the Terrace Plaza Hotel
Joan Miro

First is this painting, which was the very first painting we saw. It was right outside of the Terrace Cafe, and it had been commissioned for the Terrace Hilton Hotel. I recognized the artist right away, from our Classical Baby DVDs. This was huge - not surprising as it was a mural. And the colors were so rich!

Judith with the Head of Holofernes
Sandro Botticelli

Sandro Botticelli is my favorite painter of all time. So seeing one of his works in person was awesome. This painting was tiny! I confess that I expected it to be much larger, but it was about the size of a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper. (Rough guess as to the size.)

Mother and Child
Mary Cassatt

Another great painter. I was holding Lex when I pointed out this painting to the family, and this is the one that he really responded to. I guess I can see why - this is life as he knows it right now.

Toilette of Venus
Simon Vouet

I have never seen this paining anywhere before, and I don't know much about this painter, but I really liked this work. It was huge, too. This is my favorite style of painting, at least before I saw this next one...

Undergrowth with Two Figures
Vincent van Gogh

This painting was so vibrant. The colors were so intense. It was simply beautiful, and this little image does NOT do it justice. I wish I owned some van Gogh paintings for my house.
