I had been sitting with Connor in the cafe while he had a cool chocolate milk, and Lex and Grandma Ella were exploring on their own. When we were finished in the cafe, I called Grandma Ella to see where they were so that we could catch up with them. She informed me that they were in the gift shop. Of course.
As soon as we got close to the gift shop, I saw Lex run out of the shop with a small stuffed animal tucked under his arm. Grandma Ella ran out after him. A store clerk ran out after her. I caught Lex and carried him back to the store, where I had to lift him up to the scanner so that the store clerk could scan the tag on that stuffed animal and we could pay for it, because he would not let it out of his little grip, even for a second. I took the tag off after that, and it was only then that I found that his new little friend was a Wild Republic Wows Lemur, with glow-in-the-dark eyes. Good choice, Lex!
Lex carried his new friend all over the museum that afternoon. While sitting on a bench and taking a little water-in-a-sippy-cup break, Megan and I asked him what his new friend's name was. At first, he didn't respond. So I offered "Lemur" as a suggestion. He said, "No." So, next I suggested, "Lee." He said, "No." So, we asked again what his name should be, and he said, clear as day, "John." I'm not making this up, I swear. Megan heard it, too!
When I put Lex to bed that first night, with John tucked tight under his arm, of course, something special happened. After I turned out the lights, Lex realized that John had glow-in-the-dark eyes. He started talking to John, and got very excited. He kept poking poor John in the eye. But I don't think John really minded too much.
Of course, Lex and John have grown so close now that Connor is starting to get jealous. He rightfully pointed out the fact that Lex got John, but he didn't get anything at the museum. I don't think Connor ever even stepped foot in that gift shop. I tried to explain that there were lots of times in life when he got something special and Lex didn't.
But then Connor started being mean to John and Lex. He would strip John away from Lex and take him and run away. He said he was doing it because he wanted a Johnny of his own.
So, Connor and I got online and looked at all the Wild Republic Wows animals with glow-in-the-dark eyes. He didn't want the polar bear, the owl, or even the white ring tailed lemur. He wanted the exact same one Lex had. I ordered it. I asked him what he was going to name his lemur. Connor is insistent on naming his lemur Johnny, just like Lex's. I think that he partly believes that the animal is called a Johnny, and not a lemur.
When I informed Connor that his Johnny could be here as soon as Friday, he complained that it was a long time until then. I told him that Johnny was coming all the way from Madagascar (because that's where lemurs live, right?), and he asked if "they had to kill him first." Oh my!
Once I explained that these little lemurs were stuffed animals made of fabric and stuffing, he asked me to teach him how to make his own here at home. Of course.
