Did you know that there are 13 recorded species of bat in Ohio?

Also, tonight, there is one less bat living in Ohio.

As I was driving on the freeway, at about sunset, a bat flew out of the trees.  I saw it coming towards me and thought to myself, that's not a bird, it's a bat.  And then it smacked into my windshield.

Since we were going about 70 mph, it made a huge smacking sound.  And then it bounced off into oncoming traffic.

That bat's a goner.

Both boys were in the backseat, just nodding off since it was about bedtime, but the whole thing was so loud and violent that they both woke up and wanted to know what had happened.

We decided to do some research when we got home to try to figure out what kind of bat it was.

We saw brown and white fur, and I have a pretty good idea how big it was.  The two most common bats in Ohio are the Little Brown Bat and the Big Brown Bat.  I tried to determine which it was based on how big I thought the bat I hit was, and I have determined that I either hit a big Little Brown Bat, or a little Big Brown Bat.
