I mean, before we had small children, we would go downtown on the riverfront and watch the fireworks in the mob of about half a million people.
But lately we have decided to do something a bit more relaxed so that the kids have room to play and roam safely.
At Scioto Audubon Park, we have a good view of the fireworks, and we have a bit of room to ourselves where we can set up a canopy for shade and a grill for food.
This year, we arrived around 1 or 2 pm and got a great spot and made a day out of it.
We went to the park playground and played for a while.
Then we climbed up to the top of the water tower viewing area for a good view of downtown and the tent city below.
Nana and Grandpa came with us. Grandpa was the grill master for the day, and Nana was first officer in charge of refilling squirt guns. She perfected a system of pouring the water in using water bottles and ziplock bags so that not a drop was wasted!
Our good friends Julie and Logan came to join us.
I had purchased very high quality squirt guns at Target the day before, at the unbelievable price of $.89 for three guns, and each of them had two guns to use in their water battles. Also unbelievably, all six squirt guns were still functional at the end of the night.
Our friends Sara and Jason and Ethan and Noah also joined us, and brought Spiderman Bubble guns. The kids had a fabulous time chasing each other around then.
I can't be exactly sure, but I think this may have been the first time the kids ever got to do sparklers.
Both the boys were wearing blue Lego Star Wars shirts that day, and the soundtrack for the fireworks had a good deal of Star Wars music in it, which turned out to be a great coincidence. When Lex recognized the music, he shouted out, "They are playing Angry Birds Star Wars music!"
Happy Independence Day, America!
