That's what we are calling it now.
Cold weather has come to our town. Like really really freezing weather. I'm talking about 8 degrees Fahrenheit with 36 mph winds. And it isn't just freezing us, it also froze the pipes for the fire sprinkler system in the attic of the building we live in. And when pipes freeze, they burst...
This caused a small flood in the apartment above us, but most of water came down down down into our apartment.
And it came quickly.
One minute I am in the kitchen making chocolate chip cookies (because that's what homeschoolers do when they are trapped in the house on a frigid wintery day) and the next minute I look up because of a whooshing sound, and I see a flood of water in our living room. By the time I had whipped out my cell phone to call maintenance, the water was an inch deep in the living room and heading for the rest of the apartment.
For the record, I'm glad that I don't own the frozen pipes and that someone else had to clean it up and fix it. Living in an apartment has perks.
These photos were taken after the maintenance crew showed up with shop vacs to suck the water out. That means not all the water is pictured here.
That tiny towel didn't stand a chance against the flood.
Lex is stranded on his tiny island. He's plugging his ears because the shop vacs were loud. The fans they left afterwards were loud, too. You can see Connor standing in the doorway of his room in the background. His room was the only one that didn't get water in it. As the water came towards his room, he grabbed all the blankets off his bed and built a levee. It worked. I had already grabbed all the blankets and thrown them in the washer by this point.
The maintenance crew had the whole place cleaned up within an hour, and they left 7 industrial fans to dry everything out the rest of the way. I am so thankful that someone else cleaned it all up for me!
