Amarillo Route 66 Celebration

This year for the 4th of July, Amarillo decided to do something new.

Instead of doing a small fireworks show at the park on the 4th like they usually do, someone decided to do a proper fireworks display downtown in connection with the Route 66 Celebration that always happens on the first Saturday of July.

This means that the 4th of July fireworks were done on July 1st this year.

All the media here spent a few weeks reminding everyone of the change, and they were very clear that the fireworks were supposed to start at 9:45 pm, which makes sense, because that's when it gets dark now.

We spent the whole day at home, and finally decided to start thinking about getting ready to go around 8 pm.  We got downtown around 9, and they lit off a single firework to mark the time.  We found a spot with a good view, parked and sat down.

No sooner had we gotten settled, than the fireworks started!

We think maybe they were supposed to let off a single 9:15 firework, but lit the wrong fuse? It wasn't even dark yet!

And no one has explained it yet.  It's not even a big deal.  It's just so Amarillo.

But, the show was pretty good, and there was hardly any traffic getting there or home. Sometimes living in a small town is nice.

Happy Independence Day!!
