Well, yesterday the building manager figured out that the water problems were due to some pipes freezing in the basement, so they took care of that by lunch time.
And, in the street between my building and the construction site next door (where they are still putting in that hotel), the City of Columbus and Columbia Gas tore up the street to look for the gas leak. I assume that the problem was either a result of the cold weather or the construction activities. Fortunately, the jack hammering hasn't started again today, and the gas odor has left our building.
The only good thing about the sub-zero weather and the jack hammering is that it has finally deterred the picketing that has been going on in front of the construction site for months. This union has been pissed off that the construction company is hiring Mexican workers for cheaper than African Americans are willing to work. When the weather turned cold and the union members didn't want to picket anymore, they started paying homeless people to march in front of the building and chant. Their chanting was so loud that we could hear it all the time. I hope they don't start it back up any time soon. I also heard a rumor that the union was finally running out of money to pay for the homeless people to picket for them. I hope that's true, although it would be a tough break for the homeless who had gotten used to their $10 a day.
