Connor has been very excited about this project! He went shopping with me to pick out the fabric, and he knows that I was making this for his new room, which he still adores.
I had Kevin buy a piece of plywood and cut it to the size and shape that I wanted.
I used glue to attach the foam to the wood.
I bought high density 2 inch foam from JoAnn's. It's sold in sheets that are 90 inches long and 24 inches wide. That means that I had to cut the foam and piece it together to fit the headboard. The final shape of the headboard comes mainly from the shape of the wood and foam, so you have to be careful cutting the foam. I recommend using an electric carving knife to cut the foam.
Fortunately, batting is sold in all sizes, ranging from a crib-size to a king-size blanket, so it was easy to find a piece of batting that was large enough to cover the entire headboard. This helped to smooth away the seams in the foam.
I used a staple gun to attach the batting and the fabric to the back of the wood.
The fabric I bought was 54 inches wide, which wasn't wide enough to cover the whole headboard. I had to stitch two lengths of fabric together to make it wide enough. Getting the stripes and pattern straight was a little bit of work. It was mainly just time consuming, though.
Here is the finished headboard. Kevin bought some metal brackets that we are going to use to attach it to the wall in Connor's room.

looks GREAT--Love the stripes and colors--great job and great fabric choice!
Nice Job!!!! How much would you say the whole project cost? Did you put fabric over the back too?
Now are you making coordinating
bedspread, pillow shams and curtains. Just kidding.
Ooooh! I like this! We still don't have a headboard and this makes me think I can just whip one up! Are you redecorating the baby room, too, or just Connor's new room?
We are leaving the nursery the way that it is. We did it in orange and yellow with jungle animals so that we wouldn't have to redo it when we had another baby.
I didn't bother to cover the back of the headboard, since we are just going to be attaching it to the wall. I did buy some extra fabric to make a coordinating window valance. I have more extra than I thought I would, so I might make some pillows too or something.
Impressive. I have always thought about doing something like this, but I never have! I don't have a head board in our room.
