Which is why I thought this particular article about the BP oil spill was so great. You should read it, too.
But first, I have a confession. I've never read an actual book by Stephen King. I love his columns in EW, but I've never read his books. I like Michael Crichton's books, but Ann Rice drives me crazy. Are these indicators of whether or not I would enjoy a Stephen King novel? I don't know. I can't say. But if you read Stephen King, can you give me a good book to start with? Please and thank you.

I would say start with the Dark Tower series. If nothing else, you can get through the 7 books and say you've accomplished it. The first book, The Gunslinger, is PAINFULLY dry and boring, but you have to read it to understand the whole series. There are confusing, disturbing, scary, funny, sad, touching and boring passages in each of the books, but I think overall it's one of the best series I've ever read.
And you might enjoy getting your feet wet with some of his stand-alone novels. The Talisman omes to mind. It's a little sci-fi, a touch of scary and a compelling story of family and redemption.
The 80s horror novels might not catch your interest, but his late 90s writing (especially anything right around and after his accident) is more refined and pointed.
I really could go on and on...
