The Brickyard: A Photo Essay

Continuing our impulsive cross-country tour of famous racetracks, I took the boys to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of both the Indy 500 and NASCAR Brickyard 400, after we were done visiting the stadium where the Colts play.

I had originally planned to spend the whole day at the Indianapolis Children's Museum, but the boys' desires for all things football and racing totally derailed my intended plan. Since I really just wanted something fun to do that we couldn't do at home, this fit the bill, and we were all happy.

We found the racetrack with only one turn-around required. And without using GPS, either. I was just using one of those somewhat-complete-maps-for-out-of-towners-showing-where-they-should-spend-their-money maps that I got from the front desk of our hotel that morning. Am I awesome, or what?

We arrived. The boys were both awake.
They both saw the front gate.
Then, Lex promptly fell asleep.
See him rubbing his hands through his hair?
He does that when he is sleepy.
Anyways, he was totally asleep by the time I parked the car.
He remained asleep while we walked to the museum building and bought our tickets.
He even slept through the entire bus tour of the track.

Unlike the tour of the Daytona Speedway, this one took us around the entire track, on the race track. It was a little strange to ride a bus around the banked turns, but we didn't topple over or anything, because they aren't nearly as steep as the ones at Daytona.

The Pagoda

The yard of bricks which mark the start/finish line in front of the Pagoda.
Also, if you look in the reflection of the glass of the Pagoda, you can see us.
Or our tour bus, rather.

I swear to you that Lex woke up the very instant that the bus parked and the tour guide thanked us for joining him.

So, we decided to walk around the museum and take a look at some of the winning cars and trophies from over the years.

The boys ran around the cars yelling that each one was their favorite, and Mommy, please take my photo with this car, I like it the best, and look at this one, Mommy! It's my favorite color/number/shape. They terrorized the place, but they were totally cute and so excited and stayed on the correct side of the ropes, so the nice old guard didn't bother to ask us to leave. Although I could tell that he was watching their every move to make sure they didn't cross those ropes and actually touch the cars. But they were very good on that point.

We were moving through the cars so quickly that I couldn't keep up with them and read the signs at the same time. So, I took some photos of interesting-looking signs to read later at home. Like this one:

After seeing every car and motorcycle and trophy in the museum at break-neck speed and with high-pitched screams of delight, we were done with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And none too soon, either, because this was the view of my back seat before we even left the parking lot:

Lex is saying,
"Don't take our picture, Mommy. Connor is sleeping!"

But Connor is totally out, so it didn't bother him at all.

The End.

Sidebar: Maybe now that we have toured not just one, but two NASCAR race facilities, we will make a point to actually watch a NASCAR race this coming summer. I mean, right?
