Alibates Flint Quarries and Meredith Lake
We finally took the kids and went to visit the Alibates Flint Quarries and Lake Meredith. It's about an hour away from our house.
It was a very interesting trip. We watched a short movie at the Alibates visitor center about the native people who used to live in the area and the tools they made from the flint.
Connor has a tip broken off from a spear point.
It really was out in the middle of nowhere. We saw some antelopes.
And cows. Lots and lots of cows.
While we were there, we decided to visit the lake, too.
Lake Meredith supplies all the drinking water for the area, but it's running out. And, no one here actually drinks the water right from the tap. There are drive through stores everywhere that sell only clean water, ice and tea (made with the clean water and ice). Like just about everyone else, we only use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
The lake is so low, actually, that there was a huge fire here last year. We could see scorch marks everywhere.
You used to be able to boat and fish in the lake, but it's gotten so low that you aren't allowed to boat any more. We drove right past the old boat docks on the way down to the water. They aren't even in the water any more, and you can tell that they moved them lower at least once before giving up completely.
