P90X Nutrition Plan

Kevin is doing the P90X Extreme Home Fitness program, and I get to be his personal chef.

The program comes with a nutrition plan, complete with a daily food menu and recipes. Last night, we went grocery shopping for all the food that we needed for just 2 (!) days worth of meals according to the plan. We spent $150, and all we bought was the extra food that we needed for his meals for these two days. We already had a kitchen full of food, by the way.

Here is what we bought:

green cabbage
red cabbage
red onions (2)
mango
tomato
artichokes
lime juice
celery
plum tomatoes
tomato paste
grapefruit
spinach leaves
feta cheese
Dijon mustard
low fat buttermilk
low fat Swiss cheese
cucumbers (2)
28 oz canned tomatoes
low sodium tomato juice
carrots
green pepper
red pepper
red wine vinegar
lemon juice
white vinegar
skim milk
fat free ham slices
1% cottage cheese
fat free turkey breast
fresh strawberries
Roma tomatoes (3)
eggs (12)
green onion
mushrooms
low fat shredded cheddar cheese
law fat shredded mozzarella cheese
romaine lettuce
hearts of palm
avocado
low fat ranch dressing
soy nuts
salmon
asparagus
wild rice
swordfish
chicken broth (6 cups)
minced lemongrass
fresh dill
fresh basil
fresh parsley
fresh oregano
white wine
onion
roasted red peppers

The following items were on the list, but we couldn't find them in the unfamiliar store we were at, so we didn't buy them:

jicama
caraway seeds
ground turkey breast
sourdough bread crumbs
fresh ginger
shallots
arrow root

On the menu:

Today

Breakfast - mushroom omlete, fresh strawberries, cottage cheese
Snack - celery with peanut butter
Lunch - chef salad
Snack - nuts with dried berries
Dinner - salmon, lemon-dill sauce, asparagus, wild rice, red pepper soup
Snack - soy nuts

Tomorrow

Breakfast - spinach scramble, skim milk, grapefruit
Snack - cottage cheese
Lunch - turkey burger, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, gazpacho
Snack - soy nuts
Dinner - swordfish, mango-ginger sauce, wild rice, artichoke
Snack - nuts with dried fruit

After we got home from the store last night, I spent hours (yes, hours) measuring out the portions using a scale and preparing all his meals and snacks for today, with the exception of dinner. I'm going to make his dinner tonight. And at the same time, I'm going to go ahead and make all his meals for tomorrow. It takes a really long time to make a chef salad when you are making sure that each ingredient is exactly measured, down to the ounce. I was preparing his food until midnight.

And, since I am spending all this effort to make his food, I'm going to be really *really* REALLY upset if he cheats on his diet. If I catch him with even a single french fry, so help me...

That's one expensive meal plan. Are you and Connor eating the same thing too. Or is your food on top of his diet? It's awfully brave to start a diet at the begining of the holiday season. There will be cookies, candy and snacks everywhere.

so, is he strong enough to start this BEFORE Thanksgiving and stick with it on Turkey Day?

That's really just his food, but we can eat some of it. For instance, the soups are large batches.

I hope he can stick with it during the holidays, but I agree that this is a dicey time of year to start. But, if it helps him skip some of the goodies and junk, than I suppose it is a very good idea.

One of the meal plans is for turkey, so I was thinking of bringing the scale with us so he could see what size serving he *should* be eating. I'm sure it will be nothing compared to what he would usually eat on turkey day.
