I want to paint Connor's room. Green. A nice lime-but-not-exactly-lime green shade that matches his headboard and new dinosaur bedding.
Connor, however, wants nothing to do with green. Or lime. Or any other shade of green or lime or not-quite-lime.
His favorite color is BLACK, so he wants me to paint the walls of his room thus.
I remember when I wanted to paint my room black. But I was 14 years old. Not 4 years old.
My parents wouldn't let me paint my room black when I was 14. I got stuck with yellow instead. They claimed that they would never be able to re-sell our house if there was black paint in it. Which may or may not be true. And they were always thinking of selling whatever house we were living in.
That's not my concern so much in this case. We aren't planning on selling our house, and I know that we could repaint if we wanted to put it on the market.
I was concerned that finding paint to cover black walls would be tough, but my friend Wendy informed me that there is a new paint at Lowes that will cover any kind of dark paint in just one coat. So there goes that argument.
Actually, I once saw an article in a home improvement magazine endorsing black wall paint. And I loved the photos. But it was a living room, with black walls, white trim, a huge white fireplace and white furniture and all sorts of silver accents, like silver candle sticks and chandelier. This isn't exactly the look we are going for in our preschooler's bedroom.
So, while part of me wants to paint his room black and put up all sorts of outer space and glow in the dark star decorations for him, I don't think I'm actually going to.
I kind of want to do it for him because I wasn't allowed to do it when I was a kid.
But I kind of want to paint his room green because I want to paint it green and I am the mom now, so that means that it is finally my choice. Because I'm the one who is actually going to buy and apply the paint.

Black on the bottom, green on top? Or, green with a black accent wall?
three words for you--ACCESSORIZE DON'T PAINT! (and also, almost-lime green walls with black accents would be SO COOL!) You have to live with this too!
I mean, if his favorite color changes next year and he suddenly decides he hates black, are you prepared to given in everytime his tastes change?
You could always compromise and go with a dark Navy color. It can give the same cool dark effect. You can still put glow in the dark things all over the place!
Hmmm, perhaps the accent wall. I saw your posts about accent walls on facebook this morning.
I did just read in Better Homes & Gardens this month that accent walls are a cop-out...and that you should just go with the color all over, however.
Oh, and the room totally needs painted. Right now it is primer over hot pink. Tres chick.
Oooohhh, but black as an accent wall would be all wrong since I've already got the navy going on as the accent color in his room. I don't think I can fool him with the navy either.
