I took the boys to the St. Louis Zoo early one morning upon the recommendation of a friend.
This fantastic zoo has free admission every day, which means that I spent a ton of money while we were there. $22 per hour, to be exact. You see, since the zoo itself is free, they have figured out a million other ways to make money.
To start, parking was $12.
But, since we were there so early, we were able to take advantage of a special offer. During the first hour that the zoo is open, from 9 am to 10 am, certain attractions that normally require an admission fee are free.
We rode the carousel twice! And we visited the Caribbean Cove, which is a touch pool full of stingrays and sharks. This was one of my favorite parts of the zoo. The stingrays were surprisingly soft to the touch, and if you held your hand still in the water, they would swim past so that you could pet them. Every time a shark swam by us, Connor would screech and insist that everyone pull their hands out of the water. Then, we bought some raw fish and squid and we fed the stingrays. That was awesome!
My other favorite exhibit was the penguin and puffin house. The entire thing was kept at a very cold antarctic temperature, and the penguins seemed very much at home. They were squaking away happily, and it turns out that penguins are really loud. The boys liked this exhibit, too, until they were frozen solid and insisted that we leave so that they could get warm again.
Here are some flamingos, and Connor showing me how they were standing in the water.
The St. Louis Zoo is huge. We did not even come close to exploring it all. But, since the zoo is very large, there is a train that will take you to different locations around the zoo.
Connor's favorite animal at the St. Louis zoo?
The Giant Anteater.
Lex's favorite animal at the St. Louis zoo was the tiger.
