We passed a sign on the freeway notifying us that Montezuma's Castle was at the next exit. We decided to check it out, provided that we found it within a mile of the freeway exit. At exactly one mile, we passed the sign for the Montezuma Castle National Park Entrance. Then we drove on the National Park Road for miles before we got to the actual castle. It was like they knew what we were thinking.
Montezuma Castle National Monument is located 50 miles south of Flagstaff, Arizona, via Route 89, the scenic road through Oak Creek Canyon.Southern Sinagua farmers began building this five-story, 20 room dwelling in the early 1100s. It stands in a cliff recess 100 feet above the valley. Early settlers marveled at the structure and assumed that it was Aztec in origin, hence the name Montezuma Castle.
