On Monday morning last week, there was a perfect storm of sorts. Of the Lex sort, specifically.
You see, when I had put him to bed on Sunday evening, his Uncle Kris was visiting at our house. Often, when Kris comes to visit, it is for a few days at a time, so Lex assumed that Kris would still be at our house in the morning. I heard him wake up, run downstairs to find Kris (and most likely jump on him to wake him), and after he ran all over the whole house, I heard him scream in anguish and rage that his uncle was gone. He was absolutely heartbroken.
I got out of bed and calmed him down. Then, he noticed that Daddy was leaving for work...with a suitcase. After he found out that Daddy was going to be gone on a work trip for a few days, he was heartbroken all over again. So, I calmed him down and we sat down to watch a conciliatory episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Junior. Almost as soon as I got the program started, Kevin came in and informed us that he really needed us to drop him off at the airport. Which was a huge disappointment to Lex, because it meant leaving the house right away and not getting to watch Mickey after all.
So, he cried in the car for a while, and then sulked a bit. When he had to say goodbye to Daddy again, it was just too much for him to bear. I felt terrible, but he settled down pretty quickly after Kevin left and we drove away.
And then we were already in the car, and out of the house, and I knew we were almost out of milk at home, so I made the bold decision to take Connor and my heartbroken little Lex to the grocery store on the way home.
We were in the produce section of Kroger when Lex found Zane. You see, the floral department is right next to the produce section, and at the end of the floral department there is a display of stuffed animals intended to be gifts. Lex spotted this super cute dog, picked him up and refused to put him back. I decided not to make a big deal out of it, and at least let him carry the dog around while we shopped.
It turned out that before we had even reached the register, Lex had named the dog Zane, after the white ninja from Lego Ninjago, because of all of his white fur. He also informed me that this was going to be the last puppy that I would ever have to buy for him. I was totally on the hook for this $9.99 stuffed dog.
It turned out to be a good decision. He hasn't been more than arm's reach away from that dog since then. They do everything together, and Zane comes with us everywhere we go.
Lex is always telling me about how Zane is feeling and what his doggy needs. He likes to "feed" his puppy, and he is taking really good care of him. Well, except for this afternoon when Zane kept getting run over by a toy tractor so that Lex could use his first aid kit to take care of him. That poor dog kept getting broken bones, which Lex would fix before running him over with the tractor again.
Boys.
P.S. These photos remind me of this. And of this. And this one too.
