The Story of the Hook

Earlier this year when we visited LEGOLAND Atlanta, Lex picked out a foam LEGO pirate hook from the gift shop.  He loved this hook!  He wore it all the time, to all sorts of places.

But then, disaster struck!

We were driving on the freeway, going 65 mph or so, and he rolled his window down.  Then, he held his hook out the window, and as you can imagine, the wind caught the hook and ripped it from his grasp.  It was lost on the freeway, and he was devastated.  Totally heartbroken.

Around this same time he started wearing his eye patch.  So, I told him that if he did a good job wearing his eye patch every day until his patch poster was totally full, he would receive a new hook when he was done with that patch poster.

Yes, it was a bribe, but it was exceptionally handy.  I only had to remind him that he would get a new hook each time he was reluctant to put his eye patch on.

Well, 50 days later, Lex had completely filled his patch poster!

When I realized that he was nearing the end, I called LEGOLAND and ordered a new hook.  It was delivered on the 50th day exactly!  Unfortunately, we weren't home when it was delivered, and Lex fell asleep before we got home.  So, I put the new hook in his room for him to find first thing the next morning.  He thought it was a great surprise!

I don't know if you can tell, but Lex is so happy to have his hook back.  He loves it and wears it all the time.  Just like before.  But this time, he says that he won't roll his window down in the car again.

We have started a second patch poster now, but we haven't had to make any type of bribe to go with this one yet.  I'm not sure that we will, but if it becomes necessary, I am willing to do it again.
